My jumping position has bothered me for ages.  Most of the time I manage to stay in balance but every time I see photos or videos I cringe.  Don’t get me wrong, in recent years it’s got better but it’s still a little hit or miss and there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

This week I enlisted the help of a friend.

First she looked at my general position and had me walking, trotting and cantering with no stirrups.  I haven’t done this for a while.  She decided that I was strange as I seemed to be gripping with my calves (normally its knees and/or thighs).

Then we practiced jumping with stirrups. I need to concentrate on pushing my bottom back (rather than coming up and forward), folding from the hips, keeping my legs underneath me and giving more with my reins. Easier said than done!

Over the course of the hour there was obvious improvement but watching the videos back it’s clear that when I sit up I come up through my middle rather than unfolding from my hips with a straight back.

More practice required!
